4G World Expo in Chicago was the big wireless industry event for the week. The conference, which ran from Tuesday through Friday, featured keynotes from key executives, focusing primarily on the rollout of next-generation network technologies and the ecosystem surrounding them.

Here's a recap of the rest of the week:

• Less than a week after Motorola introduced its version of an Android smartphone, LG on Monday said it will follow suit. The company said the LG-GW620, the OEM's first Android handset, will be available in Europe in the fourth quarter.

• Also on Monday, NEC, Casio Computer and Hitachi announced the integration of their mobile terminal businesses into one joint venture, creating Japan's second largest cell phone maker. The JV will launch next April.

• On Tuesday, discount carrier MetroPCS Communications tapped Ericsson and Samsung for its 2010 launch of its LTE network. Ericsson will provide infrastructure equipment and Samsung will provide the carrier's initial LTE handset.

• Tuesday also saw a surge in Sprint Nextel shares. Stock prices surged more than 10 percent by midday Monday after the U.K.'s Sunday Daily Telegraph reported Deutsche Telekom AG is considering making a bid for the U.S. telecommunications company.

• On Wednesday, Leap Wireless International escalated the prepaid wars, with new plans rolling out at big-box retailers. Leap said the new plans include all-inclusive monthly $40 and $45 plans that will be added to the existing PayGo product line. The $40 plan includes unlimited talk, U.S. long distance, access to Cricket's extended calling area, domestic and international text and picture messaging.

• Hump day saw the release of Donut, the new Android SDK. The new v1.6 Software Developer Kit (SDK). Donut is an upgrade from Cupcake, the previous v1.5 SDK.

• Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen agreed to sell wireless spectrum licenses in Oregon and Washington to AT&T Mobility, according to a document filed with the FCC. Allen has agreed to sell the licenses through his Vulcan Spectrum limited liability company to the mobile division of AT&T.
